CPA Annual Convention 2020 – Online Delivery
Conventions are an opportunity to share knowledge and experience with others in our profession, and to learn about new ways of thinking, working, and benefiting others in the clinical, professional, and technical realms. Due to the significant health risks posed by COVID-19, the CPA made the difficult but necessary decision to cancel its’ 2020 annual national convention in Montreal, scheduled from May 28-30th, with pre-convention workshops (PCW) scheduled for May 27th.
However, as we have seen, the traditional settings of work and academia have moved to virtual formats, allowing social and physical distancing and promoting productive work and learning while sharing the responsibility of “flattening the curve”. One of the most important considerations discussed by the CPA prior to the cancellation of the 2020 convention was the loss of extremely valuable opportunities for personal and professional growth accorded by pre-conference and in-conference workshops, presentations, and symposia.
As a result, CPA staff have been working behind the scenes to bring you a virtual conference program for 2020. Presenters of papers, seminars, symposia, and workshops have been contacted, and we are pleased to report that many of them are excited to participate in alternate forms of delivery. This effort will include the delivery of live webinars and lecture series, as well as extensive recorded content on psychological science, practice, and research.
As we recognize the importance of the pre-conference and in-conference sessions to psychologists in fulfilling professional licensing requirements, Continuing Education credit will be granted for participation in pre-conference workshops, and for a number of 90-minute workshops. If you are unable to attend a live session, many of the workshops will subsequently be available as recordings on the CPA’s Continuing Professional Education site.
The intent is for much of the content to begin going live and online in early Summer, continuing through the Summer months. The work is complex, but the CPA is dedicated to serving its members and the community through the promotion of the science and practice of psychology in Canada. We are working, and learning, as we build a program that will foster engagement and discussion throughout the summer of 2020 and beyond.
Details on content and scheduling will be posted as soon as they become available. We hope you will join us as we explore the possibilities of virtual delivery.
We are pleased to announce that we will be presenting select topics from the slate of pre-convention workshops originally scheduled for the Montreal 2020 pre-conference workshop day. Workshops will be presented in webinar format and will also be available for later viewing via the CPA’s Continuing Professional Education page. The workshops will be eligible for CE credits, and will, where appropriate, be recognized by the Ordre des psychologues du Québec.
