This presentation will overview the rationale and application of 7 professional practice guidelines for working with adults with complex trauma history (CTH) that conveniently form the acronym HISTORY. First, psychologists are guided by Humanistic principles and values in their way of relating to persons with CTH. Second, psychologists seek Integrative solutions to the complex psychological and psychosocial problems often experienced by persons with CTH. Third, psychologists aim to Sequence therapy and support for persons with CTH based on individual readiness and client preference. Fourth, psychologists endeavor to understand the psychological effects that CTH may have across the Timeline of an individual's lifespan. Fifth, psychologists strive for positive Outcomes for all psychological problems presented by persons with CTH. Sixth, psychologists appreciate the therapeutic Relationship as the foundation for working with persons with CTH. And finally, seventh, psychologists aspire to help persons with CTH answer the question why the trauma occurred.
Paul Frewen is an Associate Professor of Psychology, Psychiatry and Neuroscience at Western University, Canada. He is a Past Chair of the Traumatic Stress Division of the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA), and immediate Past President of the Practice Committee of the American Psychological Association (APA) Trauma Psychology Division #56; he received early career awards from both divisions. He Co-Chaired (with Dr. Courtois) the development of the APA Professional Practice Guidelines (PPG) for Working with Adults with Complex Trauma Histories in 2024, contributed to the APA PPG for Assessment of Traumatic Stress, and co-authored (with Dr. Lanius) the book, "Healing the Traumatized Self", in 2015. He has authored 150 peer-reviewed journal articles on trauma psychology and related topics, and is a practicing trauma psychologist in London, Ontario, Canada.
